The Bardavon Opera House, located in Poughkeepsie, New York is more than 130 years old and has been holding performances since 1869. The building is the oldest continually operating theater house in New York State.

The building began life as the Collingwood Opera House. The opera house has a long and interesting history. It has spent time as a movie house (in 1923), and was nearly demolished in 1976. It bounced back and became the best performing arts and cinema venue in the Hudson Valley.

The opera house has a diverse selection of offerings, including the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Concerts, Main Stage performances, and much more. Families can gather to watch great old movies such as It’s a Wonderful Life, Ghostbusters, and more. You can also take the children to watch some performances especially for them.

Perhaps you would like to take a tour of the opera house. From October to June, you can make appointments to take a guided tour. The tour will focus on the history of the building and give you a walk through. You can also request a slide show, or the grand tour, which also comes with a demonstration of the 1928 Wurlitzer pipe organ. The tours range from $2 to $5 per person, depending on the tour you choose.
