Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge. One of the most famous bridges in the nation, the Brooklyn Bridge is located in New York City. It is one of the oldest and largest suspension bridges in the nation and spans more than a mile across the East River. For a time, it was even the longest suspension bridge in the world.
The bridge connects the boroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan. In 1964, the bridge became a National Historic Landmark, a National Historic Engineering Landmark in 1983, and it is one of the most iconic pieces of New York.
John Roebling designed the bridge, but died before construction began in 1867. His son then took over the project and spent the next fourteen years overseeing the construction of the bridge.
Today, the bridge is used for more than just commuters. It is also the site of protests, marathons, and much more.
One of the most popular things to do while in New York City is to walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Not everyone knows that this is possible, but close to 5,000 pedestrians and more than 2,500 cyclists cross the bridge in this manner everyday. The walk takes at least half an hour, but most people spend far more time on the bridge, taking pictures and reading the plaques that detail the history of the bridge and the city, as well as point out some interesting sights.
Pedestrians can enter on either the Manhattan or the Brooklyn side of the bridge. On the Manhattan side, the entrance is at Centre Street and Park Rowe, just across from City Hall Park and east of City Hall. The entrance on the Brooklyn side is near the Federal Court Building, and can be reached by taking the stairs on Cadman Plaza East and Prospect Street. Alternatively, you could take the ramp on Johnson Street and Adams Street.
The Brooklyn Bridge has a long and wonderful history, and it is one of the most famous and recognizable sites in the entire country. Walking across the bridge is a great way to spend a few hours, and is something that most people who come to New York should try at least once.
