Anyone with even a slight interest in the culture of Germany must visit the Goethe House German Cultural Center while he or she is in New York. You can learn about the arts and culture of Germany and Germans in America. You can see the gallery, the library, and a number of other exhibits and events.

The Goethe House German Cultural Center is located in a townhouse across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it happens to be the only one of its kind in the city. The Center is part of a larger network of institutes dedicated to spreading German culture and language.

Many people who live in New York frequent the center because it offers them a chance to learn German and become part of the frequent activities and events hosted there, such as film screenings and readings from German authors. Spreading the German language is one of the goals of the Goethe-Institut.

You can find a number of different interesting things at the center. If you are a film buff, you will certainly want to check out their collection of 16mm films. The films, which range from the 1920s to the modern day, can be rented and shown in nonprofit arenas. In addition, the Center shows a classic German film each month.

The library at the Center has many wonderful works from German authors, with books both in German and in English. You can also find a number of books about Germany, its history, culture, and people.

The Goethe-Institut New York has also recently opened an area called Ludlow 38. This satellite space is located in the downtown region and is not too far from the Center. Ludlow 38 houses a variety of contemporary art, and you are sure to find something interesting.

The gallery and most of the events hosted at the Goethe House German Cultural Center are free. Times for the gallery vary, and the exhibits and events change on a regular basis. Be sure to visit their website at goethe.de/Ins/us/ney/enindex.htm to find out the latest information and events.

Even those with just a slight interest in German culture should take the time to visit the Center. It is a nice way to spend an hour or two.
