Millions of Things to See at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known also simply as the Met, is one of the most often visited tourist destinations in New York City. This world renowned museum is located at the Eastern Edge of Central Park on what is known as the Museum Mile. This is one of the world’s largest collections of art in the world, containing more than two million pieces. The pieces are divided into an amazing array of different curatorial departments.

Musical Instruments

Here you fill find a wide variety of instruments from around the world, and learn about their historical and social importance. You can see everything from guitars, violins, and pianos, to exotic instruments like the zither.

Arms and Armor

Walk amidst armor, swords, axes, shields and firearms in this section of the museum. You can see the armor of the third Earl of Cumberland, a Colt Third Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver from the mid 1800s, and many other interesting pieces.

Asian Art

A number of different styles of artwork can be found in this area. You can view paintings, ceramics, sculptures and more from a variety of Asian cultures, including Korea, China, and Japan.

Drawings and Prints

Everything here was made from the Renaissance onward. Some of the highlights of this department include Head of the Virgin by Leonardo da Vinci and Sampson and Delilah by Altdorfer.

Egyptian Art

Some of the most popular items in this section of the museum are the funerary pieces like the Coffin of Khnum-nakht and the Outer Coffin of Henettawy. Other items, such as carvings of sphinx and other sculptures are also quite popular.

The museum has a curatorial department that everyone will want to visit. Most people will want to visit them all!

The museum has suggested fees for those who visit. While they are only suggested, it is a good idea to donate, as this helps cover the costs of special exhibits. The suggested prices for adults are $20, seniors 65 and over $15, and students are $10. Admission to the museum is free for children under 12 and accompanied by an adult.
