The American Museum of Natural History, One of the Greatest Museums in the World. The American Museum of Natural History, founded in 1869, is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. It is one of the largest and most famous museums in the world, and it plays host to countless visitors every year. The museum is spread over 25 connected buildings and houses 45 permanent exhibit halls, as well as a library and a research center. The museum contains millions of specimens, many of which are on display.
One of the reasons that the museum is so popular with tourists and New York locals alike is that there is so much to see there. You will always find something new to see no matter how many times you return. The following are just a few of the incredible things you can see on a visit to the museum.
Fossil Halls
One of the favorite spots in the museum for many visitors is the Fossil Halls. You can see fossils of creatures such as the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, and more. Most of the fossils here are real as opposed to casts of fossils. In fact, they have one of the largest collections of real fossils in the world.
Mammal Halls
This is another area of the museum beloved by visitors. You can see a number of dioramas built to look just like the natural environments of the animals displayed there. These beautiful and detailed dioramas encompass animals from around the world. You can see yaks, bears, jaguars, and many more.
The Culture Halls
The Culture Halls showcase a variety of ancient cultures from around the world. You can see displays highlighting the Northwest Coast Indians, Africans, Asians, and South American People, as well as many others.
You will also be able to explore all of the other wonderful halls in the museum. The Ocean Life Hall, Primate Hall, and North American Forests Hall don’t even begin to scratch the surface of all you will find at the American Museum of Natural History.
The museum is open from 10 AM until 5:45 PM daily. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The museum has suggested donations for entrance. The suggested donation for adults is $15, for children 2 – 12 $8.50, seniors and students with ID is $11.
