New York City Vacation, New York

There are several reasons why a family summer vacation in the “Big Apple,” should be added to your list of destinations.  Let’s review some highlights of a New York City vacation.

While there are many packages to New York, consider staying at the Hilton New York, located at Avenue of the Americas.  It is considered to be the center of the city and very close to Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center.  Not far from Broadway, the theatre district, Restaurant Row, and Times Square, it is also one block from Fifth Avenue where you can take a leisurely stroll and window shop.  In addition, you are also in the vicinity of the Museum of Modern Art, Central park, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center.

Plan on attending an afternoon matinee theatre performance of The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, or Mary Poppins on Wednesdays, or take a carriage ride through Central Park.  Dine at the most famous restaurants in the world, or stop at a Trattoria and have a delicious Italian dinner.  New York has all manner of international cuisine as well as restaurants offering burgers, hotdogs, and a wide variety of good eats.

You can take a tour of Manhattan on the double-decker bus, or take a Circle Line tour around the Isle of Manhattan, where you can view the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  Take the elevator up to the top of the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center.

You do not need a car in Manhattan, as buses and subways are the main forms of transportation.  Another area you may wish to visit is the South Street Seaport where you can take a tour of the Museum there and have lunch on the pier.

Visit F.A.O. Schwartz, the world’s most famous toy store, where your kids can find life-sized stuffed animals, dance on the piano (from the movie “Big), where boys can make cars in the Hot Wheels Factory, and girls can make their own dolls at the Madame Alexander Doll Factory; this is truly a child’s wonderland store.

Make arrangements for an NBC Studio tour, visit the New York Public Library, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, or take a walk around Central Park where you will find the famous Zoo, or visit the site of Strawberry Fields, dedicated to John Lennon. If you have time, venture out to Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho, and Greenwich Village.  Also, visiting Madison Square Garden should be a priority on your list as well.

There is so much to see and do in Manhattan, and while you may not be able to see it all; you will certainly come to love the Big Apple and all it has to offer.  The hotel concierge can provide you with maps and as much information as you require.  Tour buses are always available and taking an initial tour of the city is a good opportunity to get your bearings and determine which sites you’d like to explore further.
