There are six million acres of lakes and forests as well as villages and towns that make up the Adirondack Park.  The museum is dedicated to sharing the history of the park and its people with visitors from all around the world.

There are 32 acres with 22 indoor and outdoor exhibits and programs offered at the museum.  Enjoy the beautiful gardens and the magnificent views while on your vacation to New York.

The exhibits at the museum cover a wide range of subjects from outdoor recreation, boats, transportation, the fine arts, work and industry as well as tourism and community life.  You can see how the history of the Park influenced the life of those in the area and what an impact the area has on those of the area still today.

The museum offers programs, both for entertainment and education on a regular basis. There are opportunities to visit the Reising Schoolhouse and play games and create projects just like the Adirondack kids have done for generations.

There is a playground for the toddlers and pre-schoolers to romp and play.

Learn about the life of the lumberjacks that worked in the Adirondacks at the museum’s logging exhibit.

Permanent exhibits include one dedicated to teaching you about living with wilderness.  Here you will learn the geology, geography and settlement of the Adirondack region.  You will hear stories, be exposed to the people, places and themes explored in depth at the museum in their exhibits.

The museum’s largest exhibit is on transportation and community life showing things such as the private railroad car, mammoth snow roller, Concord stagecoach, and the carriage that rushed Vice-President Teddy Roosevelt to a train the night the President, McKinley, died.  You will see sleighs, buggies, a horse-drawn hearse and other vehicles that show the life before automobiles.  You will see a farming gallery, peddler’s wagon, and a complete blacksmith shop.

There is a research library for your use, publications program, and an active education department furnishing the area with special events to entertain and educate.

The museum opened in 1957 after years of talking, dreaming and working to get it completed.

The museum is open from May thru mid-October.
