Unique Features at Howe Caverns

If you’ve toured caves before, you’ll be impressed with Howe Caverns from the beginning. Your adventure starts with an elevator trip 156 feet down. You’ll instantly feel the drop in temperature when you arrive at the floor of the cave. Howe Caverns is a great place to cool off on hot summer days, but don’t forget your jacket!

In addition to the dramatic descent, another unique feature of Howe Caverns is the underground Lake of Venus. Your tour will include an exciting quarter-mile boat ride on this incredible lake.

Throughout your tour of Howe Caverns, you’ll learn about the history of the cave and the many impressive natural formations you see along the way. Knowledgeable tour guides provide guests with a wealth of intriguing and educational information about Howe Caverns.

Howe Caverns Lantern Tours

If you would like to see Howe Caverns in a slightly different light, plan to take a special Lantern Tour. You can tour part of the cave by lantern light by making reservations ahead of time. Lantern Tours are held Friday and Saturday evenings year round. These special tours are available for adults only.

Adventure Tours at Howe Caverns

If you are especially interested in Howe Caverns or caves in general and would like to take a longer, off-trail tour, Adventure Tours are now offered. While regular cave tours last approximately 80 minutes, you’ll spend 2 hours exploring Howe Caverns on a guided Adventure Tour. You’ll explore areas of the cave that are inaccessible to regular tour guests.

Adventure Tours at Howe Caverns require advance registration, and they are only available to visitors over the age of 18. You will be supplied with all of the caving gear and outer wear required. At the end of your Adventure Tour, you’ll receive a certificate of accomplishment, a souvenir and a free pass for the regular cavern tour.

Howe Caverns Cafe

The Howe Caverns Cafe was recently renovated, and it is a terrific place to enjoy lunch, dinner or a snack on your visit. A variety of items are available at the Cafe, including homemade soups and desserts. You can enjoy a spectacular view of the beautiful Schoharie Valley while you enjoy your meal at the Howe Caverns Cafe.
